Inside the Blackpool Magicians’ Convention 2026

Secrets, Tricks, and Inspiration

Blackpool: The Mecca of Magic
For magicians, Blackpool isn’t just a seaside town—it’s the event of the year. What started as a small, one-day gathering for magicians in the north of England has “magi-fested” into a global phenomenon. Over 3,000 magicians from around the world now descend upon Blackpool for four days of magic, camaraderie, and, let’s be honest, a little bit of mischief. Magic knows but one language, and here, it’s spoken fluently.

For many, this is the only time of the year they get to connect with like-minded people in a safe space—free from the fear of ridicule. It’s a place where secrets are shared, ideas are exchanged, and the art of magic is celebrated in all its forms. If you’re curious about the art of magic, you might enjoy discovering some tricky magic tricks that will leave you amazed.

A Magician’s Playground
The Blackpool magic convention is choc-a-block with everything a magician could dream of: lectures, shows, dealer halls, after-shows, and all-night “jamming” sessions where tricks are traded like currency. It’s a far cry from my very first convention 28 years ago, back when I was an 18-year-old magician wide-eyed at the dealer hall of the Eastbourne IBM convention. I’d only ever been to my local joke shop in Lichfield (yes, the same town I now perform in—check out my Lichfield magician page), so the idea of wandering from booth to booth, seeing the latest and greatest in magic, was like stepping into a dream.

Fast forward to today, and Blackpool has taken the dealer hall to a whole new level. With over 100 dealers showcasing their shiniest new toys, it’s a dangerous place for a magician armed with a credit card and a dream of finding the one trick that could make their career. But let me tell you, buying magic has become an art in itself.

The Temptation of the Dealer Hall

In the past, I was quick to whip out my credit card—faster than a rat up a drainpipe—only to find that the miracle trick I’d purchased wasn’t quite the miracle I’d hoped for. Impractical, poorly built, or just not my style. These days, with 28 years of professional experience under my belt, I’m far more discerning. A trick has to pass more than just the surface test; it needs to tick all the boxes for a working magician like me. Will it suit my style? Will it impress a layperson? Will it survive the wear and tear of a busy gig schedule?

Sure, the dealer hall is still a tempting world, filled with juicy tricks that make any conjurer salivate. But I’ve been stung too many times to fall for the crafty sales pitches. These days, magic is sold one trick at a time, often wrapped in slick promo reels that don’t always live up to the hype. Magic: A Family of Many Personalities

Here’s something you might not realise: magic isn’t a one-size-fits-all art form. It’s more like a big, quirky family where everyone has their own personality—and not everyone gets along. There’s comedy magic, stage illusions, mind reading, children’s magic, dark and mysterious magic, and more. Each branch has its own fans and practitioners, and while they’re all part of the same magical family, they don’t always see eye to eye.

It’s a bit like a family reunion. You’ve got the loud, funny uncle (comedy magicians), the mysterious cousin who always seems to be hiding something (mind readers), and the sibling who’s great with kids but not so much with adults (children’s magicians). They’re all related, but that doesn’t mean they’re all best friends. In fact, some magicians have a bit of disdain for other styles of magic. It’s fascinating to see how personal taste plays such a big role, even in a community that shares the same passion.

The Challenge of Entertaining Everyone

This diversity in taste makes it incredibly difficult to cater to everyone, especially in a multi-national audience like Blackpool’s. This was evident during a few of the gala shows, where the compere for the evening faced mixed reactions. Some audience members loved their style, while others were less impressed. It’s a stark reminder of just how subjective entertainment is.

I see this all the time in my own gigs. I can perform for one group of 10 people who are absolutely blown away, laughing and gasping at every trick. Then, moments later, I’ll perform the exact same tricks for another group, and they’ll respond with polite indifference. It’s a humbling and fascinating part of being an entertainer—what works for one person might not work for another. The Magic of Learning and Inspiration

Beyond the dealer hall, the convention offers a treasure trove of lectures. From close-up magic to stage performances, comedy magic, mind reading, and even children’s magic, there’s something for everyone. I attended a few, but I’ll admit, the dealer hall had me wrapped around its magical finger for most of the time.

And then there are the shows. Every year, the convention outdoes itself, battling to become a better version of its already incredible self. The production values improve, the acts get more impressive, and the organisers somehow pull off the impossible. Find out what makes a great magician and how they captivate audiences.
