Close-Up Magic at Anfield
A behind-the-curtain look at the LEEA Awards at Liverpool FC - a tropical storm, a lopsided crowd, and the Close-Up Corner doing what it does best.
Choosing a magician for a corporate event in Liverpool might feel like a straightforward task. You find someone online, book them, and they show up to do a few card tricks. Job done. But what happens when the venue is a sprawling stadium, the heavens open up in a biblical downpour, and the audience is an 80/20 mix of men and women? That's when you need more than a hobbyist with a decent shuffle.
Recently I had the pleasure of performing at the LEEA (Lifting Equipment Engineers Association) Awards, held at the iconic Liverpool FC stadium. As a Liverpool fan, the venue was a massive perk. But as a gigging magician it presented a unique set of challenges that they conveniently forget to cover in magic school. This is a look behind the curtain at what to expect from a magician at a corporate event - especially when things get interesting.
If you want the short version, you can jump straight to my corporate magic packages. Otherwise, here's how the night at Anfield actually went.
- The glamorous, behind-the-scenes reality of a corporate magician.
- Adapting to unique audience dynamics on the night.
- Why the post-dinner lull is an event killer - and how to fix it.
- The Close-Up Corner: a game-changer for corporate entertainment.
The not-so-magical side of the job
It isn't all vanishing coins and thunderous applause.
Before the first guest is wowed, there's the small matter of logistics. For the LEEA Awards, that started with battling a tropical storm that had decided to make Liverpool its home for the day.
Then came navigating the labyrinthine corridors of a football stadium to find the right entrance, all while hauling gear. Finding a parking space that doesn't require a Sherpa and a packed lunch is the first trick of the night.
These are the moments that remind you being one of the best magicians for corporate events across Liverpool and the North West is about more than sleight of hand. It's grit, problem-solving, and arriving unruffled - even after wrestling a flight case through a monsoon.
Understanding the room
The crowd at the LEEA Awards was about 80% men and 20% women.
That isn't just a statistic - it fundamentally changes the dynamic of a room. In my 28+ years of performing I've seen it time and again. With a lopsided gender mix, behaviours shift. Men can get more laddish, the energy gets wilder, and it takes a specific approach to keep everyone in it.
This might throw a less experienced performer, but for me it's an opportunity. It's about reading the room, adjusting the tone, and knowing which material lands with maximum impact. You learn to navigate the banter, play off the group's energy, and make sure everyone feels included and amazed.
That adaptability is what separates a professional from someone just going through the motions.
The Close-Up Corner: your weapon against the lull
Every event has a danger zone - that awkward stretch after the plates are cleared and the awards handed out. The official bit is over, but it's too early to leave. No dance floor, or no mood to dance, and you're left with a room slowly deflating.
That's where my Close-Up Corner comes into its own. As the UK's first magic booth, it's a focal point - an entertainment hub people drift to when they're ready. Instead of me interrupting conversations, guests come over for the magic on their own terms.
At the LEEA Awards I ran it during the drinks reception and again after the main event, positioned away from the DJ's speakers. It became a magnet - a continuous stream of entertainment filling that post-dinner void and keeping the room buzzing long into the night.
It turns passive attendees into active participants - shared moments of astonishment and laughter.
Watch this... literally
One of the favourites at the Corner. A borrowed watch, a bit of misdirection, and a guest who has no idea their wrist is suddenly a lot lighter. All in good fun - it goes straight back.
This kind of thing is exactly why the Corner keeps a crowd. Plenty more on my Instagram and TikTok.
What the night taught me
- A professional corporate magician does far more than tricks - they manage the logistics, adapt to any audience, and solve problems before guests ever notice them.
- Reading audience dynamics is everything. A lopsided crowd needs a different approach, and experience is what tells you which one.
- The post-dinner lull is a real threat to your event's atmosphere. Proactive entertainment is the fix, not an afterthought.
- The Close-Up Corner gives a room a focal point and keeps guests engaged on their own terms - no interruptions, no dead air.
