I set up my Close-Up Corner in the Library for their evening reception - here's how it turned the post-speeches lull into the best bit of the night, ten minutes from my front door.
Sandon Hall: where timeless elegance meets "OMG, how did he DO that?" A little while back I had the pleasure of bringing my Close-Up Corner to Amanda and Tom's wedding there - and it turned into one of my favourite evenings of the year.
It's a venue close to my heart, and not just because Sandon Hall is a genuinely stunning place. It's practically on my doorstep - a ten-minute drive instead of my usual marathon treks across the UK. Turns out the best gigs sometimes happen right down the road.
Amanda and Tom wanted their magic in the evening, so rather than working the tables I set up my Close-Up Corner in the Library - a proper little destination where guests came to me. It's the perfect way to fill that in-between stretch after the speeches, when the day guests are flagging and the evening lot are only just arriving.
What's the Close-Up Corner?
Instead of me coming to the tables, the Close-Up Corner brings the guests to me.
It's exactly what it sounds like: a dedicated little spot - in Amanda and Tom's case, tucked into Sandon Hall's Library - where I set up and hold court. Guests drift over in twos and threes, gather round, and get front-row seats to close-up magic happening inches from their faces.
It works brilliantly for an evening reception because it becomes a destination. There's always a knot of people around it laughing and gasping, which pulls others over to see what the fuss is about. No chasing tables, no interrupting conversations - just an easy, constant flow of guests who actually want to be there.
And because it's fixed in one photogenic corner, it quietly becomes one of the best backdrops of the night - the spot everyone remembers and half the photos come from.

Why the evening is the secret ingredient
The evening is when a wedding quietly shifts gears - and where it can just as easily stall. Your day guests have been on their best behaviour for hours: ceremony, speeches, three courses. Your evening guests have only just walked in and are playing catch-up with the champagne. Somewhere between the two sits that dreaded mid-reception lull.
That's exactly where the Close-Up Corner earns its place. A bit of jaw-dropping magic here, a stolen watch there (calm down, I give them back), and suddenly the room's laughing, cheering and primed for the dance floor instead of eyeing the exit.
Fill the lull between dinner and dancing and the whole evening lifts. Leave it empty and you're fighting to get it back.
The faces say it all
You can't fake this. This is what close-up magic looks like from six inches away.
The photos tell it better than I can. When the magic happens right in someone's hands - their card, their ring, their watch - the reaction is instant and completely genuine. No polite clapping, just gasps, double-takes and a fair bit of flat-out disbelief.
That's what makes an evening reception come alive: a corner of the room where people are properly, helplessly reacting - and everyone else wondering what they're missing.
