I was having a chat with a wedding videographer recently, about how wedding magicians tend to sit right down the pecking order when it comes to wedding suppliers.
He reckoned videographers aren't much higher up that list when it comes to a couple's priorities either. Which got me thinking — are wedding videographers actually worth it?
The short answer is yes. Wedding videos are worth their weight in gold and then some. Here's exactly why one deserves a spot in your plans.
The moments you'd otherwise have missed
A wedding video isn't just something to reminisce over — it's full of the little moments you never saw happen.
From your wedding party horsing around with the photographer to the quiet, tender chats between the bridesmaids, there are dozens of small details only a videographer catches. You're busy being the centre of the day; the camera isn't.
Those delightfully honest, unposed moments are the ones that make a wedding film truly special — and the ones that'll make you smile every time you watch it back. They tell their own story, long after the day is done.

And because they're filming from different angles, you'll end up with moments, emotions and details your photographer was never positioned to catch — not a knock on the photographer, just a second pair of eyes on a day that only happens once.
The questions couples actually ask
For me, it shouldn't be an either/or. The two work together to create images and memories you'll keep for years, so weigh up both when you're planning your wedding rather than pitting one against the other.
For a lot of couples it comes down to budget, and if money's tight the videographer is usually first for the boot. But video is amazing value, and every benefit above shows why it deserves its place. Looking back on my own wedding day, we booked a videographer very last minute — and if we planned it all again, we'd prioritise it over a fair few other things.
Usually you'll get a montage — a snappy 3–5 minute highlights film or a 10–15 minute mini-movie. Plenty of videographers will also let you buy the raw, unedited footage on top if you want the lot.
Of course you can — same as you could ask a mate to cater it or make the dress. But filming a wedding is more than pointing a phone and hoping. It's a high-pressure, one-shot job: the vows, the first look as the bride appears, the first kiss, the first dance, the speeches. Phones capture great clips, but they won't have the feel, consistency and quality a professional brings — and you only find that out when it's already too late.
